[빌보드 코리아] 최근 독도를 둘러싼 한국과 일본의 신경전이 날카로워지고 있다. 그렇지만 문화적 교류는 원활한 편이다. 한국가수가 여전히 건재한 힘을 과시하며 빌보드 재팬, 오리콘 차트 등 현지 유력 음악 차트 상위권에 이름을 올리고 있다. 빌보드 케이팝 핫 100 차트 런칭 1주년을 맞아 빌보드 재팬 기자로부터 일본 시장에서 케이팝이 인기를 끄는 이유를 진단해봤다.
올 상반기 일본에서 가장 크게 활약했던 신인은 누굴까. 남성 그룹 SS501 출신의 김현중을 꼽는 기자들이 많았다. 김현중은 지난 1월 일본 데뷔 싱글 ‘키스키스 럭키가이’를 발매해 12만 2000여 장의 판매고를 올렸다. 지난달 4일 발표한 싱글 앨범 ‘히트’도 첫 주에만 18만 장을 팔아치워 오리콘 싱글 주간 차트 1위에 올랐다. 공연 실황을 담은 DVD도 차트를 휩쓸었다. 빌보드 재팬에서도 김현중의 활약은 돋보였다. 빌보드 재팬의 야마구치(Yamaguchi) 씨와 히라가(Hiraga) 씨는 “김현중이 SS501 시절부터 쌓아온 인기에 힘입어 솔로 가수로서도 성공적으로 데뷔했다”고 평했다.
그렇다면 일본 시장에 진출한 역대 한국가수 중 누가 가장 성공했다는 평가를 받고 있을까. 빌보드 재팬 기자들은 이구동성으로 동방신기를 선택했다. 스기오카(Sugioka) 씨는 “동방신기는 여전히 새로운 기록을 쓰고 다닌다”며 멤버 3명이 소속사의 전속계약으로 갈등을 빚어 팀을 빠져나갔음에도 위상은 흔들리지 않았다고 밝혔다. 히라가 씨는 동방신기의 이 같은 인기는 “보아 같은 한류 1세대가 밑거름을 다져놓았기에 가능했다. 한국문화에 대한 일본인의 저항 의식이 많이 줄어들었다”라고 분석했다.
세계에서 두 번째로 큰 일본 시장을 한국가수는 어떻게 뚫을 수 있었던 것일까. 빌보드재팬 전문가들은 일본어 버전, 완성도 높은 퍼포먼스, 향수를 자극하는 멜로디 등을 꼽았다. 야마구치 씨는 “한국에서 검증을 받은 인기 곡을 일본어로 번역해서 냈던 것이 주효했다”고 분석했다. 히라가 씨는 “귀를 맴돌게 만드는 매력이 케이팝의 장점이다.1980~1990년대 제이팝 스타일과 유사해 현지인에게 친근함을 준다. 남녀가수 외모 또한 일본인이 좋아할만한 아름다움을 갖고 있다”고 설명했다. 또 다른 관계자는 “타이틀곡의 완성도가 높은 데다 세계 시장을 겨냥해 제작한 뮤직비디오가 인상적이다. 속이 훤히 뚫릴 만큼 대단한 스케일”이라고 추켜세웠다. 스기오카 씨는 매니지먼트사의 체계적 시스템도 양질의 가수를 키웠다고 밝혔다. “주소비자가 어떤 장르의 음악을 좋아하는지 정확히 파악하고 있다. 가수를 발굴해내는 시스템이 날로 향상되고 있는 것 같다”고 말했다.
일본가수와 비교해 제작 비용이 저렴한 케이팝 가수의 음반이 높은 순위를 차지하게 됐다는 시각도 내놓았다. 야마구치 씨는 “레코드사가 한국가수의 CD 가격을 낮춰 현지인이 쉽게 살 수 있도록 만들었다. 한국가수가 비교적 저렴한 가격의 CD를 내며 시장을 확장해가면서 일본가수가 성장할 기회가 점차 사라지는 것 같다”라고 의견을 밝혔다.
그렇다면 케이팝이 설 자리를 넓혀가기 위해서는 무엇을 보완해야 할까. 히라가 씨는 “유사한 성격의 아티스트가 많다. 개성을 살려야 할 것”이라고 지적했다. 또한 “지속적으로 이슈를 만드는 스타급 가수가 적다. 영향력 있는 가수가 나와야 한다”라고 덧붙였다. 스기오카 씨는 “한국가수는 활동 이외의 측면(사생활 노출이나 소문 등)이 주목받을 때가 많다. 좋은 이미지를 쌓아가야 할 것”이라고 짚었다.
